Formed in the dirty back alleys and dive bars of Toronto, Ontario in 2005, THE CREEPSHOW has redefined the saying "No Rest For The Wicked". Since their inception, the band has brought their genre-defying blend of country-tinged, psycho punk rock n' roll to over 25 countries worldwide with plans to conquer many more as soon as possible.

Fronted by the fiery Sarah "SIN" Blackwood (guitar/vox) and backed by the swarthy Sean "Sick Boy" McNab (stand-up bass/vox), The Reverend McGinty (sermons/organ/vox) and the righteous Matt "Pomade" Gee (drums), THE CREEPSHOW is an explosion of live energy that is a tasty treat for the ears and eyes alike… Whatever you do, don't you dare write them off as just another psychobilly band. While their lyrics draw inspiration from b-movies and early horror films, they're also full of intriguing insight and personal stories dealing with everything from addiction to anxiety to love gone terribly, terribly wrong.

SIRETT returns to LEAD CANTABILE

MEDIA RELEASE

Sirett Returns to Helm of Cantabile Choirs

For immediate release

October 20, 2009

Kingston conductor and composer, Mark Sirett has returned to the helm of the Cantabile Choirs of Kingston following a six-month sabbatical during which time local conductors, Marie Anderson, Tim Stiff, Geoffrey Sirett and Ian Juby worked with the choirs with guest artists Elise Bradley of NZ and Diane Loomer of Vancouver.

During his sabbatical Dr. Sirett traveled extensively through North America, Europe and Africa.  In addition to adjudicating ChoralFest in Calgary, he became the first Canadian to be invited to serve on the International Jury of the Cork International Choral Festival, Ireland.  As a member of the jury he adjudicated the prestigious Fleischman competition that attracted fourteen outstanding choirs from Sweden, Finland, Italy, Ireland, the USA, Slovenia, and Norway.  He also adjudicated numerous Irish youth and adult choirs in the national classes.

In addition to his time in Europe Dr. Sirett spent three weeks in Ghana, AFRICA where he volunteered in the northern city of Tamale and the remote village Jatong Wullanyilli where he taught in local schools and assisted with other projects.  One of the village volunteer residences was named in honour of Dr. Sirett at the conclusion of the visit.  (see attached photo)

During the summer Dr. Sirett was invited to be the guest conductor of both the Adult and Junior Choir Camps for the Nova Scotia Choral Federation.  This year, in addition to several commisions by other choirs, he looks forward to being the guest conductor for two choral festivals in Ontario, as well as the Heartland Festival in Iowa that will feature all of his own compositions.

The Cantabile Choirs launch their 14th season of choral events with "Brown Eagle, Black Raven", a tribute to Maori, First Nation, Australian aboriginal, and Inuit peoples on November 7th.

More About…

JENN GRANT - From her debut record, Orchestra for the Moon, Jenn Grant's name has surfaced in four star reviews from Harp and The Globe and Mail, earned her several East Coast Music Awards nominations, and landed her on tours with the Great Lake Swimmers, Hayden, Justin Rutledge, Martin Tielli, Danny Michel, and The Weakerthans.

There are traces of Orchestra for the Moon in her latest offering, elements that helped shape Jenn's sound into what it has become. Producer/pianist Jonathan Goldsmith (Bruce Cockburn) leads a heart-on-sleeve band through Echoes: Kinley Dowling on violin, David Christensen on bass clarinet, Sean MacGillivray on bass, Gary Craig on drums/percussion, and Jenn herself on guitar. These are all sincere songs captured in the moment, on tape. Echoes was recorded and mixed with a fully analogue process at Puck's Farm.

Without the songs being old or feeling old, Echoes' analog heart reflects the art and the heart of Jenn herself, inciting a familiarity that connects the listener with the roots of music.

KYRA AND TULLY - Toronto born Kyra and Halifax Nova Scotia born Tully are now based in Kingston, Ontario. It has been three years since this duo's debut self titled EP garnered acclaim as a Critic's Pick "Best of 2006" in Toronto's Now Magazine and positive vibes from Exclaim! and CBC Radio as they charted nationally on the Earshot charts. Their folk-kissed, mellow pop music combines Tully's timeless songs about visceral experiences in nature and away from home with Kyra's unabashed sincerity in songs of love, loss and inspiration. Kyra and Tully's rich melodic songs beautifully capture the moment of fragile humanity that lies between deep sadness and profound hope. If the world were ending tomorrow, this is music that could lull you peacefully to sleep. The duo has worked hard to produce their full-length record , "Wildlife (In and Out of the City) which was co-produced by Chris Coleman, Kyra and Tully and Lenny Epstein and recorded by Chris Coleman (Night Sun) and mastered by Marty Kinack (Hayden, Broken Social Scene).

LAKE ONTARIO WATERKEEPER - As one of the most exciting young environmental groups in the country, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper has drawn local, regional, and national attention for our clean water initiatives. Launched in February 2001, Lake Ontario Waterkeeper trains other individuals and volunteer groups to be local water guardians and to report pollution concerns.

The View from My Room is Great
(1983-1984, 90 minutes)

The View from My Room is Great: Visual Artists of the Kingston Area is a series of half-hour videos produced by the Kingston Artists' Association Inc., forerunner of the Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre. The filmmakers gave ample scope to each artist to describe their intent and working processes in the informal setting of home or studio. Our selection features Richard E. Buff, a performance artist and holographer with a sly sense of humour; Mary Rawlyk, a printmaker and feminist; and J.C. Heywood, longtime Fine Art Professor in the Department of Art at Queen's. Together, the three films offer an intriguing picture of Kingston's visual art scene in the mid-1980s.

After a well deserved break and a year long production over Labyrinthes, a third album released in Canada in February 2009 on Dare to Care Records, Malajube is back on stage. The band kicked-off their tour last march which, up until the end of the year, will bring them around the world. Nominated for the prestigious Polaris prize this year, (the winner will be announced on September 21th at a Gala where all nominees perform), Labyrinthes is already and surely, leaving its mark.

The pop/rock group litteraly took over the indie rock scene over the years, since the release of their debut record Le Compte Complet and more recently has drawn a wide amount of praise for their second album Trompe-l'Oeil, a masterpiece that found his way of springing out of the already artistically rich local music scene, with their unique and original sound.

Garth Fagan Dance To Open Series On October 20

Now in its 39th anniversary season, Garth Fagan Dance is renowned for the individuality, unmannered approach, and virtuosity of its dancers.

The ensemble's distinctive movement and singular dance language draws on many sources, exhibiting a true fusion of dance idioms created by its Founder and Artistic Director, Garth Fagan.

Experience the excellence and quality of the "handsome, exotic and completely concentrated dancers" as they perform live at the Grand Theatre on Tuesday, October 20, at 8 p.m. A selection of captivating repertoire from the past thirty years will demonstrate their critically acclaimed choreography and performance. "This is a brilliant company." - Clive Barnes, New York Post

A new feature of the Grand Theatre Dance Series performances will be post-show talk backs. Join us after the show for a Q&A with the artists from the stage. Admittance to the talk-back is free with performance ticket.

The Grand it also pleased to present a masterclass with members of Garth Fagan Dance on stage on Monday, October 19, at 6 p.m. The masterclass is intended for dance students ages twelve and up. Please note that only participants can attend and the class will not be open to observers. Admission is $5 at the door or free for those with a ticket to the October 20th performance. Half price Student Rush tickets for the Garth Fagan performance on October 20th at 8 p.m. are available in advance, as admission to the masterclass is free with a performance ticket.

Join us after the show for a talk back with the performers. Some of the cast members will make an appearance after the show and join us for leisure discussion. Admittance to the talk-back is free with performance ticket.

Garth Fagan began his career touring Latin America with Ivy Baxter and her national dance company. He then became director of Detroit's All-City Dance Company, and principal soloist and choreographer for Detroit Contemporary Dance Company and Dance Theatre. It was not until 1970, however, after beginning the Garth Fagan Dance troupe, that his true potential was met. Fagan's greatest achievements- the creation of the internationally acclaimed Garth Fagan Dance, the company that fulfills his vision, and work as a guest choreographer, most recently and notably for Walt Disney's The Lion King- have been dually recognized by a host of awards and honours.

Since then, the troupe has performed through the world. It celebrated its 15th anniversary in Harare, Zimbabwe, while on tour for the United States Information Agency. Foreign tours have included a 13-city tour of The Netherlands and appearances at France's Maison de la Danse and Chateauvallon Festival, Turkey's Istanbul Festival, Switzerland's Basel Tanz, and many more. In 1994, the company opened the then newly renovated American Center in Paris, France. In 1993, the company went on national tour with Wynton Marsalis Septet performing Fagan's critically acclaimed full-evening length work Griot New York. The company was seen nationally on the "Tonight Show" starring Jay Leno in that same piece and Girot New York aired worldwide on the PBS "Great Performances - Dance in America" series in the spring of 1995. In 1996, principal dancers were invited by the Federation Caledonienne de Danse to perform in "La Nuit des Etoiles" along with members from the New York City Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet and the Kirov Ballet. In 2004, they were one of the four dance companies performing Jazz in Motion, part of the opening celebratory events at the Frederick P. Rose Hall, the new home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and returned in the fall 2005 for their 35th anniversary season in New York City.

Tickets to Garth Fagan Dance can be purchased online at <http://www.kingstongrand.ca>, or through the Grand Theatre Box Office at 218 Princess St., 613-530-2050. The Grand Theatre Box Office hours are Monday through Sat, 12:00-6 p.m. on non-show days; 12:00-8:30 p.m. on
performance days and 2 hours prior to the performance on Sundays and holidays.

The Grand Theatre Foundation would like to acknowledge the Garth Fagan Dance Performance Sponsor, Dianne Lackonick of Assante Wealth Management, Fenlon Financial Division. The Grand Theatre offers it appreciation to its Season Partners including the Kingston Radisson as its Official Hospitality Underwriter, CKWS Television as its Official Television Partner and Kingston Life as its Official Print Media Partner.

PIGTRIGGER | Leah Woolner and Blake Macfarlane

October 17–November 3, 2009
Reception and Artist Talk: October 23, 2009, 6-8p

Pansee Atta, /Salome/, 24x48, acrylic on canvas

Pansee Atta's work in /Convergence / Divergence/ is not about her
Egyptian background or its
relationship with Canadian culture- its about the space in between,
about honestly expressing the experience of living between two
generations, two ways of being, two ways of thinking. Living in the
Kingston community is a big part of that experience: it can be very
isolating while offering some great opportunities for connection.
Atta hopes to offer art that the community she lives in needs to
see, art about a culture and history we don't see represented often
enough locally.

*Pansee Atta* is a painter completing her fourth year in the Queen's
BFA program.

Visual fragments from cartoon animation, abstract imagery, found and
made footage are mobilized in /Pigtrigger/, a participatory video
installation that aims to create a feeling of discomfort and anxiety
using imagery associated with the concept of the pig. Ripe with
connotation and nuance, the artists view the pig as an icon for
larger current conflicts embedded in the North American perspective
and a point of departure for their explorations of these ideas.
/Pigtrigger/ confronts the boundaries and expectations of the
audience allowing the viewer to control their own artistic experience.

*Blake Macfarlane* is a third year student in Queen's Film and
English and *Leah Woolner* is
a third year Queen's BSc. student.

LABYRINTHS: CLAY & PAPER. NEW WORK BY SUSAN COLLETT AT OENO GALLERY

Visitors on Prince Edward County’s Arts Trail have long enjoyed the abundant creativity of local clay artists, working in styles as distinctive and vibrant as the artisans themselves. And if you have ever taken a spin at the potter’s wheel to get a feel for the medium, you know how challenging it can be.

This month, anyone fortunate enough to be in the County has a rare opportunity to experience the work of one of Canada’s premier ceramic sculptors – Susan Collett – at the Oeno Gallery, in Bloomfield.

Collett’s provocative new works, from her Labyrinth series, are subtly coloured, and pierced by large and small holes that flood the forms with light. By piercing her sculptures, Collett challenges our ideas of light and space, and pushes the boundaries of working in clay. The large-scale pieces appear to be strong and fragile at the same time.

Also on exhibition at the Gallery are a series of Collett’s of graceful, floating natural shapes that resemble her sculptures but also have a life of their own.

Collett has received numerous awards for her work and recently received the honour of being inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts. Her work has been featured in exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., China and Korea.

Collections holding Collett's work include The Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, The Tom Thomson Memorial Art Gallery, The Burlington Art Centre, The Crown Collection of the Official Residences of Canada (Rideau Hall), The Queen Elizabeth Hotel (Montreal), The Korean World Ceramic Museum, The Ontario Securities Commission, The Bank of Montreal, and The Trump Tower (Miami).

On *Sunday, November 1 at **6pm**,* Collett will present a photomontage of her journey with ceramics, including a chronicle of her experiences in China and the influence that her residencies there have had on her current body of work. The event is free, but space is limited. Reservations recommended.

Oeno Gallery showcases contemporary Canadian fine art and occasional treasures from elsewhere. The gallery features paintings, works in mixed media, and indoor and outdoor sculptures in ceramic, metal, marble, glass and wood.

Oeno Gallery is located next to Huff Estates Inn and Winery, just north of Bloomfield.

*Exhibition open daily: October 16 - November 10
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 17, 3 - 7pm*

CKAF Administration Plan Review

As mandated, the Kingston Arts Council has established a committee to review the “Plan for Administration of Arts Funding for the Corporation of the City of Kingston Arts Fund” - a document approved annually by Kingston City Council. In preparation for the 2010 fiscal year this Committee will be reviewing all aspects of the Plan and in particular, will consider the questions:

• Should an amateur or recreational organization whose mandate or mission focuses on artistic endeavour, either creation or presentation, be eligible for a) project grant funding and b) operating grant funding?
• Should the major established arts organizations in Kingston be funded directly by the City, without going through the City of Kingston Arts Fund?
• Should an organization that uses the arts in a social service context be eligible to receive operating grant funding?
• Should the Kingston Arts Council develop a plan that provides grants to individual artists?
• Are there other municipalities that might provide models of arts funding that would improve upon Kingston’s current plan?
• Should CKAF Operating Grants be structured to provide successful applicants with a relative degree of financial stability from year to year?

To assist the Committee, artists, arts organizations and people taking part in Kingston based arts activities are invited to submit written submissions of not more than 500 words commenting or making recommendations on the Plan. A copy of the 2009 Plan is available on the Kingston Arts Council website - www.artskingston.com or by contacting Ted Worth, Grants Director at the Kingston Arts Council – (613) 546-2999 or ted@artskingston.com.

Vancouver's 3 INCHES OF BLOOD make their long awaited return to Kingston, in support of their latest release FIRE UP THE BLADES.

There's a reason fans have come to their shows wearing Viking helmets and brandishing both real and plastic swords. Born out of a love for pure metal, weaned on a diet of fantasy and mythology, *3 Inches of Blood* have been slaying the infidel and defending the faith for nearly eight years. In that time, they've released two albums and splattered the ground with crimson streaks while on tour with Satyricon, Black Dahlia Murder, Motorhead and Cradle of Filth. These are mighty accomplishments for dedicated warriors from Vancouver, British Columbia, a region that's not exactly the Camelot of heavy metal. And with their new album, */Fire Up the Blades/*, *3 Inches of Blood* have surpassed even their own manly exploits, crafting a baker's dozen of anthems and stormers that crash, rip and roar like a Medieval skirmish.

TONE DEAF 8 / FESTIVAL OF ADVENTUROUS SOUND PERFORMANCE

23-31 October 2009, Kingston Ontario:

With Queen’s University Artist in Residence, Alvin Lucier

In its eighth year, Kingston’s unique festival of adventurous sound performance TONE DEAF presents a special focus on the eminent American composer of experimental music and sound installations Alvin Lucier. Since the mid-1960s, Lucier has been a pioneering force in music and sound art, whether working with a brainwave-activated percussion orchestra or traditional chamber ensembles. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin through space.

Tone Deaf 8 will feature a week-long exhibition of two Lucier sound installation works at Modern Fuel, with an opening reception to mark the start of the weekend’s program of concerts at the Artel and Sydenham Street United Church, and a day of discussion at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Tone Deaf 8 affords a great opportunity to encounter one of the masters of contemporary music.

Also performing in Tone Deaf 8 are two former students of Alvin Lucier, well known as experimental composers in their own right. Nicolas Collins (Chicago) is widely known for his electronic music, developed around homemade devices and hacking of everyday electronics such as CD players. Ben Manley (New York City) creates intense improvised performances exploring the natural variability of wind, amplified small vibrations, and resonating objects to generate dynamic musical environments

Tone Deaf 8 is supported by Modern Fuel Gallery, Queen's University, and the Agnes Etherington Art Centre. Alvin Lucier's appearance is made possible through the Queen's University Visiting Artist Program.

Alvin Lucier was born in 1931 in Nashua, New Hampshire. Since 1970 he has taught at Wesleyan University where he is the John Spencer Camp Professor of Music.

Nicolas Collins studied composition with Alvin Lucier at Wesleyan University, worked for many years with electronic music pioneer David Tudor, and has collaborated with numerous soloist and ensembles around the world. He is currently Chair of the Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Ben Manley studied music at Wesleyan University with Alvin Lucier and Ron Kuivila. He presents electroacoustic performances and installations that call attention to interests in sonic potential and the imagination of sound energy.

Art on the Street, Oct 21-25

Studio 22 Presents

Studio22 Open Gallery is presenting the works of 2 local artists: Molly McClung and Bruce Millen.
Show runs until October 25th, 2009

Mythography
Molly McClung - New Works in Stone

Interpretations of mythical figures in classical Greece with an emphasis on beginnings, origins and creations. Starting with Chaos as the primeval cosmic force, down through a number of generations of cosmic essences, places, and deities.
Inspired by the natural essence of her raw stone, Molly's works have the appearance of having been formed by the forces of nature over huge periods of time. They are at once soft and strong, subtle and powerful in a blending that supports the earthly origins of the stones and the ascending nature of the sculptor's curvaceous lines.

'Hera' - 6" x 13" - Soapstone - artist Molly McClung

'Poseidon' - 10" x 9" - Alabaster - artist Molly McClung

Quiétude
Bruce Millen - Photographic Works

Bruce's images rarely conform to the favoured conventions of landscape photography, tending towards non-representation, minimalism and ambiguity of scale. He frequently uses natural pattern and strong graphic lines to lead the eye through the image though, contrary to the norm, not necessarily to a subject. Patterns and forms themselves are often the subject and become the image. His work blurs the definition of what exactly a landscape is.

'Facsimile 1' - 12" x 18" - photographic - artist Bruce Millen

'Show Off 1' - 10" x 15" - photographic - artist Bruce Millen

Union Gallery Panel Discussion - Crude Realities: Humanist Art in a 'Post-Everything' World

http://uniongallery.queensu.ca

Thursday, October 8th, 6:30 pm – followed by a closing reception of the exhibition Abject Nature.

Union Gallery, 1st floor Stauffer Library, Queen’s University

Crude Realities: Humanist Art in a ‘Post-Everything’ World: A panel discussion including artists Emily Vey Duke & Cooper Battersby, Kathleen Sellars and guest curator York Lethbridge.

The panel will discuss the creative strategies used to represent complex human relationships to nature, to technology, and to each other in contemporary art as it relates to work in the exhibition Abject Nature.

The exhibition Abject Nature combines three recent works by artist duo Emily Vey Duke and Cooper Battersby and is guest curated by York Lethbridge. The work investigates the relationship between humans and animals, and our collective strategies to control and understand the natural world. Duke and Battersby’s current projects tackle complex existential issues using live action and time-lapse video footage, vibrant animations, improvisational song and poetry. Their immersive installation environments also use costumed taxidermy to create elaborate mise-en-scènes for their contemporary fables. Each work takes as its starting point our collective sense of longing for stability and cohesion in a broken world and our weird ways of negotiating with a nature that is now alien to us.

The Union Gallery gratefully acknowledges support for this project from the George Taylor Richardson Memorial Fund at Queen’s University and the Queen’s Campus Computer Store.

Ontario Arts Council Strengthens Support for Individual Arts Managers

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) has strengthened its support to arts managers through the *Compass* http://ofsys.com/T/OFC4/LS/1029/530508/WA8RgP/7/158140/PnzMKcMo/I/32919/8Nm0ra.html program.

Individual managers *working within* an arts organization as well as independent arts managers are eligible to apply for assistance in job shadowing, coaching, mentorship and other kinds of professional development initiatives.

The Professional Development component *expands *on the program’s previous mentorship category.

The Compass program continues to provide organizational development support to help organizations engaged in not-for-profit professional arts activity. This stream covers the costs of bringing in a specialist to assist the organization with organizational development activities such as strategic planning, governance or fundraising.

With this change, OAC is responding to a key recommendation from the 2007 Compass program evaluation which was to increase support to the management capacities of people working *within *arts organizations, not just to the organizations themselves.

More program details are available here http://ofsys.com/T/OFC4/LS/1029/530508/WA8RgP/8/158140/PnzMKcMo/I/32919/8Nm0ra.html for anyone planning to apply to the December 1, 2009 deadline. Please read carefully.

Artscene - Manufactured Landscapes

Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal to Attend Regent Screening of Manufactured Landscapes

Award-winning Canadian director and filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal will attend the screening of her film Manufactured Landscapes at the Regent Theatre, Picton, on Wednesday, October 7. Manufactured Landscapes was awarded the Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Documentary film in 2006, when it was first released. The Picton screening will be a rare opportunity to enjoy this film as it should be seen, on the ‘big screen’, where its impact can be fully experienced. Ms. Baichwal will attend a pre-show reception at 7:00, introduce her film, and also host a question-and-answer following the film.

Manufactured Landscapes is a feature length documentary on the work of world-famous Canadian artist Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky produces large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – factories, mines, quarries, recycling operations, dams and shipbreaking sites, and uncovers the beauty in the unusual. Jennifer followed Burtinsky as he traveled across China photographing the effects of man’s hand on the landscape. Baichwal does an awe-inspiring job of conveying the work of Burtynsky and her film allows viewers to see Burtynsky’s spectacular and moving photographs in a format even larger than he chooses, magnifying the impact of the photos.

Tickets are $15.00, available in advance at Books & Company in Picton, or at The Regent Theatre on the evening of the screening. Everyone is invited to the pre-show reception at 7:00 p.m. with wines being served by Black Prince Winery; the documentary screening begins at 7:30. This is one of a series of fundraising events for Friends of East Lake, and they look forward to seeing you at the Regent on Wednesday, October the 7th.
