Atwell **Scholarship Award for Painting from Skinners Hall, London.

*STATEMENT*

I work from an emotionally imbued memory of place, sometimes painting
directly

then reworking in the studio, sometimes using photographs as aids. I have

doggedly engaged with the tradition of romantic realism, somewhat at
odds with

the prevailing mainstream.

The Opening is this coming *Friday, November 27, from 8 to10 p.m.* with
Simon Andrew present.
Come and meet the artist and chat about his work.
Wine and cheese will be served. The show will continue until December 21.
Hope to see you there!

*Rising Roots Star embarks on Train Tour to Cross Canada-*

*FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE*

Winnipeg's rising roots star Ingrid Gatin will be making her way across
Canada this fall with her first full-length album, /Broken Tambourine/.
The Broken Tambourine Tour, sponsored by VIA Rail, will take the lovely
songstress and her band from Vancouver to Québec City by train,
entertaining the passengers on board, with accordion, violin, and trash
can percussion. The crew will play some VIA Rail Train Stations and
popular venues and cafés in almost every major city with a cast of
amazing supporting bands and artists.

After a winter tucked away in a cabin in the woods, composing new music,
Ingrid returned to Winnipeg to work with Lloyd Peterson, crafting the
eclectic and beautiful /Tin Heart/ EP. The spring brought Ingrid out
into Eastern Canada on the Great Lakes Train Tour with indie darling
/Miss Emily Brown/. And after a busy summer-- collecting the pieces of
the rest of the album, recording, playing festivals, and collaborating
with talented musicians and artists alike-- anticipation is building for
the release of her first full-length masterpiece.

Ingrid Gatin's strong, soulful and sultry sound will stir your emotions
and move your body. Drawing her eclectic sound from soul, blues, folk,
and gypsy influences, Ingrid uses the interplay of vocals and piano,
accordion, mandolin, violin, and ukelele instrumentation to build her
unique and beautiful brand.

Call for Entry: Eastern Ontario Feature at One of A Kind

The Ontario Crafts Council's Eastern-Ontario Feature

within the 2010 Spring One of a Kind Show

Deadline for entry: Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Following the success of the Ontario Crafts Council's (OCC) Growing Ontario's Craft Community

Initiative in eastern Ontario during 2008-09, the OCC will feature eastern craft artists

for its new section within the choice market of the 2010 Toronto One of a Kind Show and

Sale. Not only will this section highlight and provide sales opportunities for vendors, each

participant will grow through professional development experiences and will have fewer

burdens than solitary exhibitors—see show details!

CALL FOR ENTRY

The Ontario Crafts Council invites applications for exhibitors/vendors for premium space as

housed within the OCC section of the spring One of a Kind Show. 20 applicants will be approved

for participation through a juried process.

About the Show: The One of a Kind Show and Sale (OOAK) in Toronto is Canada's largest

and most prestigious retail show featuring the work of artists and craftspeople from across

Canada. OOAK spend $1 million in the greater Toronto area for the combined promotion of

the winter and spring shows. The five day spring show attracts 50,000 visitors.

www.oneofakindshow.com

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

• Applicants must be craftspeople working and residing in eastern Ontario. This includes all

rural eastern areas as outlined at www.ontcfdc.com, as well as urban eastern areas.

• Each applicant must be the designer, creator and producer of all works as included in the

application and as intended for display and sale at OOAK.

• Objects must be made from traditional or contemporary craft media, including but not

limited to: wood; clay; metal; glass; fibre; stone; leather; resin.

• Eligible applicants include both emerging and more established craft artists; however,

all applicants must clearly justify how this would be a new experience and advance their

career/business. This is especially important for exhibitors who have previously exhibited

at OOAK in the past (see jurying details.)

• Submissions must include DIGITAL files of all documents and images, as detailed in the

submission checklist.

• Submissions grant the OCC and OOAK with permission to use accepted works for all promotional

purposes.

• All accepted applicants will be asked to provide a portrait image at a later date for OCC

and OOAK promotional purposes.

• Late or incomplete entries will not be accepted.

JURYING INFORMATION

• Jurors will assess work according to excellence of design, technique, originality, concept,

and salability. Geographic diversity will be imposed to some degree (for example, not all

participants can come from the same town/city.)

• The OCC will conduct the first round of jurying and supply a shortlist to OOAK.

• The OOAK will approve/select the final applicants from the OCC shortlist. Applicants with

prior OOAK exhibitor experience will be considered, yet preference may be given to first

time applicants.

• The OCC will notify all applicants of the final decision by December 14, 2009.

SHOW DETAILS

• The OCC section will encompass just under 1000 square ft of space displayed in a gallery-like setting.

• The OCC will design, arrange and supply all major exhibition display furniture and lighting.

The participants will supply support displays if needed in collaboration with OCC curation.

• All participants must be present for the duration of the show, but will not be burdened by

sitting within the OCC booth 100% of the time. Shifts outlined in the acceptance agreement

will allot selling time and development/market research time (to be completed by

walking the show) to participants.

• An OCC representative will be present within the section the majority of the time.

• All sales will be processed through a central OCC payment desk which will accept visa,

mastercard, amex, debit, cash and cheques.

• Participants will recuperate 100% of the sales, minus any merchant servicing fees associated

with the sale, for all works sold at the exhibition.

• All works must be for sale, and be labeled on an inventory list. A SKU# will be applied to

all products to ensure that correct vendors are credited for all sales.

• All participants will be encouraged to attend OCC regional workshops if applicable, covering

topics such as Copyright; Photographing Your Work, and one additional topic. Details

to be announced.

FEES

• There is no cost to apply.

• All confirmed participants will pay a vendors fee: OCC members will pay $300, and nonmembers

will pay $380. This is a highly subsidized rate, as the cost for the smallest 5" x

10" regular booth at the OOAK spring show costs $1,466. For all additional booth sizes

and costs for the OOAK show, please visit their website.

Goblin Market opens November 20th!

*Theatre Kingston* is thrilled to present the Canadian Premiere of
/Goblin Market/, a sensuous musical tale of two sisters reliving their
childhood experiences in an imaginary world inhabited by seductive
goblins and poisoned fruit - "an absolutely gorgeous piece of Victorian
erotica" (New York Post)
November 19 - 28

/"Morning and Evening
Maids heard the goblins cry
"Come buy our orchard fruits,
Come buy, come buy..."/

Adapted from the classic Christina Rossetti poem by Peggy Harmon and
Polly Pen, Theatre Kingston presents Goblin Market, a striking
theatrical foray into the secret and sexually charged fantasies of two
sisters who relive their childhood experiences in an imaginary world,
where they are tempted by seductive goblins.

This production opens on November 20th, stars Queen's grad and Shaw
Festival darling Robin Evan Willis (Sunday in the Park with George, A
Little Night Music, and Play Orchestra Play), and local favourite
Maryanne Wainman (Beauty and the Beast). Queen's drama department head
Tim Fort directs, and the show features Kingston musicians Danielle
Lennon, Sarah McCourt and Michael Man.

The story is about adult sisters Lizzie and Laura, who return to their
childhood nursery and relive haunting memories of their youth, when they
were tempted by goblins and the fruit they brought to market. Laura
tastes the fruit and goes mad, and Lizzie must bargain with the goblins
to save her sister.
Originally produced Off-Broadway in 1985, Goblin Market received 5 Drama
Desk nominations and the "Best Plays" Special Citation for Musical
Composition and Adaptation.

*About the Company*

Queen's University graduate Robin Evan Willis performed at the Shaw
Festival for her second season this year. She appeared in Sunday in the
Park with George and Play, Orchestra, Play. Robin debuted at Shaw in
2008 as Betty in the North American premiere of Githa Sowerby's The
Stepmother and Anne Egerman in Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music.

Other theatre credits include: Othello, Man of La Mancha and Amadeus,
Texas Shakespeare Festival; It's A Wonderful Life, Silver Dollar,
Surflight Theatre, New Jersey; Kiss Me Kate, A Year with Frog and Toad,
The Weston Playhouse, Vermont; Love and Larceny, Thousand Islands
Playhouse and Los Pajaros, Teatro Spiral, Spain.

Robin holds a master's degree in Music Theatre from the Central School
of Speech and Drama in London, England.

Joining Ms. Willis in Goblin Market is Kingston's own MaryAnne Wainman.
Ms. Wainman will be familiar to Kingston audiences for her appearances
as Sandy in Grease, Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar and Belle
in the Kinsmen production of Beauty & The Beast, which reopened the
newly refurbished Grand Theatre. Since then she has appeared in The
Fantastiks with Riverbank Productions at the Firehall Theatre in Gananoque.

The production is directed by Tim Fort. Apart from his role as Head of
the Department of Drama for Queen's University, Mr. Fort has designed
and directed many productions for Theatre Kingston, the Thousand Islands
Playhouse, and the Weston Theatre in Vermont, where he has been a
Producing Director for many years.

Mr. Fort describes the poem as gripping, and says he is excited to work
with the actors and musicians he has gathered.

"I know these are hugely talented singers and actors, experienced for
their age, and they are a perfect balance, personality-wise...With only
two actors, and they are creative actors, and great musicians, you've
got a laboratory of theatrical ideas. My job is to allow them to be
totally comfortable within the context of the scenario of this memory
piece."

Danielle Lennon is music director, and will play the violin as part of
the live ensemble accompanying the play, which also includes Michael
Man, pianist, and cellist Sarah McCourt. Dan Rider serves as Production
Manager, Kendra Peirroz is Stage Manager, assisted by Laura Lemieux.

Though the band's fourth full-length offering The World I Want To Leave Behind features a number of "firsts," Moneen vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter Kenny Bridges assures us that this isn't a new band: "We weren't trying to reinvent ourselves as much as we were trying out some things that we would have been scared of on previous records."

One wouldn't think a band that's effortlessly able to weave such a wide array of influences into their output would be "scared" to try anything. After all, Moneen has always thrived on their trademark melee of melodic components - pop that has no business being so profound; rock that shouldn't be so ambient; punk that has no right being so delicate. While that familiar formula is what ultimately drives The World I Want To Leave Behind, Bridges, bassist Erik Hughes, guitarist/vocalist Chris "Hippy" Hughes, and new drummer Steve Nunnaro have slightly shifted their take on songwriting this time out.

"We enjoy writing music that makes us want to jump off the walls and roll around on the ground - while still maintaining a song's integrity, of course," offers bassist Hughes of his band's general take on music making. Indeed, this has been the template for the band's writing ever since forming in 1999 and dropping the Smaller Chairs For The Early 1900s EP, a release that would introduce the band's shimming guitar interplay and passionate, personal lyricism to the world. Subsequent records, including 2003's Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now? and 2006's The Red Tree, have seen a continual refinement of the band's writing and wordplay, this effort being no exception.

Moneen and Winnipeg's Sights and Sounds play The Mansion on Friday December 11 at 9pm.  This will be Moneen's first appearance in Kingston since 2006.

Get ready to lose yourself and stick your horns up for Priestess's new record. After an absence of more than three years, the moment has finally come for the four Montreal beardos to release their highly anticipated sophomore record due out in Canada on October 20th on Indica Records/Red Ink. The punishing eleven-song effort, entitled Prior To The Fire, was recorded in LA in the fall of 2008 and produced by Dave Schiffman (System Of A Down, Nine Inch Nails, Mars Volta).

Since their formation back in 2003, Priestess has become one of Canada's most successful hard rock bands, and an international force to be reckoned with. The band released their debut Hello Master back in 2006 and since then has spent most of their time on the road touring with heavy hitters like Megadeth, Motörhead, Mastadon, GWAR and participating in several high-profiled events such as Heavy MTL with Iron Maiden, Festival d'Èté de Québec with Stone Temple Pilots, and Monsters of Rock/Ozzfest with Ozzy Osbourne. just to name a few.

The Priestess' profile skyrocketed when their song "Lay Down" was featured in the smash-hit videogame Guitar Hero, earning them a legion of new fans. Their music has also been heard in the HBO series Entourage, Friday Night Lights and it was recently announced that their new song "Raccoon Eyes" will be on the upcoming EA Sports' NHL 10. Their two singles "Lay Down" and "Talk To Her" also became top 15 hits at rock radio across Canada.

Prior To The Fire will also be released in the US in early 2010.

Priestess will be hopping back into their van and doing a cross-Canadian tour in support of this release in November.

Storytellings opens Nov. 14 at Modern Fuel

*14 November – 12 December, 2009*
Reception: Saturday 14 November 2009 @7pm

*STORYTELLINGS *
Lucy Chan, Peter Kingstone

The work by *Peter Kingstone* and *Lucie Chan* in Modern Fuel's latest
exhibition /*Storytellings*/ gives a voice to stories from communities
that might have otherwise gone unheard. Taking up the entire gallery,
/Storytellings/ presents a major video installation by each artist,
putting these stories centre-stage.

Kingstone's /*100 Stories about My Grandmother*/ is a four-channel video
installation that weaves together documentary portraits of male sex
workers telling stories about their grandmothers. By presenting these
stories, Kingstone subverts some expectations viewers might have about
the subjects of his videos, positioning them more as individuals than
types. Visitors to Modern Fuel are invited to lounge in the cozy
environment created for these videos and listen to the thoughts and
memories of an often marginalized community.

Chan's video installation /*Yearning to See*/ was created during a
residency in Banff where she drew portraits of people that she met while
asking them if there was a "personal cultural lesson" they might share.
She took the "cultural lessons" that she received from the Canadians,
immigrants, and international visitors she met during the residency,
along with their drawn portraits, and created several animations that
have a luminous and dream-like quality. The mysterious narratives of
these lessons, which often deal with loss and longing, and the stillness
of the searching faces in the portraits, are meant to cause the viewer
to stop and wonder.

/Storytellings /raises issues of social/cultural voyeurism at the same
time that it bridges the distance between people, creating an intimate
space for encounters that play with and displace assumptions.

*Lucy Chan *was born in Guyana and currently lives and works in
Vancouver, BC. Recently her work has shown at the Mount Saint Vincent
Art Gallery in Halifax, the National Art Gallery in Ottawa, and the
Doris McCarthy Gallery in Scarborough, Toronto. Her work is drawing,
installation and animation based, addressing cultural loss, personal
narrative, and fleeting intimacy between people.

*Peter Kingstone* is a single channel and installation video artist. He
lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He holds a Philosophy/Cultural
Studies Degree from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and
Masters of Fine Arts from York University, Toronto, Ontario. His single
channel pieces are distributed by Vtape.

Call for Submissions from student artists

TAG

the union gallery off-site project 2010

For its 2010 off-site project, the Union Gallery invites video art
submissions from individuals or collectives of students on the topic of
surveillance. The completed work should be between 5-15 minutes in
duration, in a DVD or format that can be displayed on a monitor and
should be moving images only - no sound. TAG references systems that
monitor human movements and behaviours - from the simple children's game
of hide and seek tag, to its use as an electronic piece of information
that tracks and locates, as in the myriad social networking sites. Have
you got an idea for an art video that explores this theme? Take
advantage of this great opportunity to get your work out there in the
public eye.

Selected works will be on display in venues in Kingston's downtown core
in late January/early February and will run concurrent with Vancouver
artist Kathleen Ritter's exhibition Hidden Camera, on display in the
project room at the Union Gallery. Hidden Camera is part Sorting
Daemons: Art, Surveillance Regimes and Social Control a group
exhibition, which is on display at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre from
January-March 2010. As well, the screening will coincide with artignite,
a new city-wide celebration of the arts planned for from January
29-February 13, 2010.

The application process is two-fold. Please submit a brief written
proposal of your work and how it relates to the theme, and brief
biographies of the people involved in the project indicating their
experience in video production. As well, please indicate any kind of
special technical equipment or assistance that is required. Deadline for
written proposals November 23, 2009. The final video works will be
adjudicated and should be submitted by January 15, 2010.

There have been countless records that begin with the same bombast as The Most Serene Republic's …And The Ever Expanding Universe, but few have taken listeners down a path of such enriching, introspective discovery. Long masters at stimulating senses and stirring emotions, the Ontario-based band have never sounded this immediate and attainable.

The sonic density of their previous efforts has given way to more dynamic, engaging fare, as visceral as the most obviously cloying pop music but with a more scintillating head on its shoulders.

So what's prompted a shift in musical direction for The Most Serene Republic? According to the band's musical figurehead Ryan Lenssen, the group is highly critical of and competitive with itself. "I feel like our band challenges our own status quo," he explains. "[Vocalist] Adrian [Jewett] said it really well the other day; the first record [2005's Underwater Cinematographer] was 'denial,' [2007's] Population was 'anger,' and Universe is 'acceptance.' We constantly challenge ourselves not to be stagnant because if we didn't, we'd be in constant states of pain. We need to get out of that and more in tune with nature—the ebbs and flows that make you wanna live."

Hypersensitive and buoyed on by endearing melodrama in their heads, The Most Serene Republic remain a captivating force because they continue to wrestle with their existence (and ours) by conveying such tension and conflict in their extra-extraordinary music.

The Most Serene Republic, Meligrove Band and Pelt all play their first all ages/licenced show in Kingston, on Thursday November 12 at Time to Laugh.

The Live Wire Music Series caps off their 2009 program with a dance at The Portuguese Cultural Centre on Sat. Nov.21 featuring the spectacular and award-winning Vancouver band Delhi 2 Dublin. This dynamic Punjabi/Celtic fusion band was recently awarded World Recording of the Year honours at the Western Canada Music Awards and is known for its dazzling and theatrical live performances.

Delhi 2 Dublin is the new sound of music. Blending elements of Ireland and Northern India, electronic and acoustic, mainstream and underground, the five member D2D crew takes listeners on a wild and borderless trip with their global sounds. The band fuses the traditional sounds of, tabla, dhol, fiddle, and sitar with cutting edge DJ aesthetics, to create a highly charged multi-cultural dance celebration.

Delhi 2 Dublin was awarded World Recording of the Year for their self-titled debut album at the Western Canadian Music Awards held in Brandon, Manitoba on Sept. 20th. Thought of by many as the ‘Western Canadian Junos’, the win has created waves nationwide. “Winning the award was a huge surprise for us, yet somehow it also feels like the culmination of a lot of hard work and time put in and it’s awesome to have it recognized.” Says Kytami, Delhi 2 Dublin’s violinist.

The band toured consistently throughout the spring and summer, blowing up festival stages and crowds from south to east to west and back again. Grant Lawrence from CBC Radio 3 summed it up after one of their performances: "The surprise of the opening night (of the Regina Folk Fest) for many was the absolutely outrageous set from Vancouver fusion band Delhi 2 Dublin. Hugely energetic, they blend the traditional sounds of India and Ireland with modern hip-hop beats. If Victoria Park had a roof, D2D would have blown it off. The roar of applause at the end of their set was deafening." Industry watchdogs FYI Music News said the following after this weekend’s WCMA showcase: “
Among the buzz shows of the weekend was Delhi 2 Dublin who had the entire Roadhouse bar up and dancing to their unique fusion of bhangra/Indian and Celtic tunes”.

Edison's Concrete Piano

Edison's Concrete Piano: Great Inventors and Their Not-So-Great Inventions

Join award-winning educator and author Judy Wearing as she reads from
her book /Edison//'s Concrete Piano: Flying Tanks, Six-Nippled Sheep,
Walk-on-Water Shoes, and 12 Other Flops from Great Inventors.// //
/

/Edison's Concrete/ /Piano/ highlights the careers of famous inventors —
revealing lesser-known, intriguing facts about the innovators' lives,
their wackier hobbies, their big flops and their great successes. Thomas
Edison, for example, revolutionized the world by inventing the light
bulb, the phonograph and the forerunner to the movie camera. But he also
designed a piano made with concrete, a non-operational helicopter made
from box kites and piano wire, and a machine for speaking to the dead.

Judy Wearing uses plenty of visuals in this virtual ride through the
history of some of the world's greatest inventors and their biggest
goofs. Come let these stories give you a chuckle — and convince you that
failure amid greatness is the norm, not the exception.

This free presentation will take place on Thursday, November 5, at 7
p.m., at the Kingston Frontenac Public Library at 130 Johnson Street.

Cut & Paste | Carlyn Bezic and Donald Chan

Mechanisms For Selection | Tondela Myle

November 10-November 28, 2009
Reception: November 14, 6-8p | Artist Talk: November 11, 3p

The act of collage is construction from destruction; tearing things
apart to build them up again. Donald Chan and Carlyn Bezic explore this
method and push it to other mediums, creating bizarre bodies,
many-limbed monsters, and unsettling scenes. Carlyn Bezic is in her
fourth year of Queen's BFA program. After completing her degree she
plans to continue making art in Toronto. You can see more of Carlyn's
work in the Project Room at Modern Fuel in February 2010, or on her
blog, carlynbezic.blogspot.com. Donald Chan was born in Hong Kong, but
was raised in Toronto from the age of two. He remembers drawing his
first picture at the age of five, when his grandfather handed him a pen
and a napkin inside a restaurant. Drawing since then, he found himself
working towards his BFA.

In Mechanisms for Selection Tondela Myles explores portraiture and
semi-abstraction through the use of collage and painting. Her work looks
at themes based around identity, gender and sexuality as a way to speak
about awkwardness, secrecy and instabilities found in the human
condition.Tondela Myles lives and works in Vancouver, BC Canada. She
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film studies from Ryerson University
and a second BFA from Emily Carr University, majoring in studio arts.
She was born in Lusaka, Zambia.

Poetry at the Artel

Poetry Open Mic at the Artel on Nov 10 from 7pm to 10pm

This will be the 7th in a series of a monthly poetry open mic readings
launched in May at the Artel. This open mic series at the Artel is a
monthly event scheduled for the second Tuesday night of each month, and
the venue itself is warm, inviting and acoustically sound. This poetry
series' ambition is to offer a compassionate setting for poets to come
and share their work and for others to relax and absorb. .

This reading series encourages diversity in an accepting and friendly
environment. Anything that is poetry or poetry related would be perfect.
Those participating in the reading may be reading their own work, their
favourite poet's work, singing, reading work done on a poet or poetic
era, and hey who knows. The only real restriction is time limit, which
will be determined by the number of people signing to read - but in the
past each reader has had roughly 10 minutes give or take.

This month's reading, scheduled for Tuesday, November 10th at the Artel
(corner of Queen and Sydenham Sts.), will run from 7:00 to 10:00pm, with
a short intermission part way through and with limited food and beverage
provided. It is also a free event, but donations would be greatly
appreciated and will be given directly to the Artel for providing their
space and their assistance.

SIDE NOTE:
The reading series also aim to be a resource in promoting other artistic
endeavors. If you have or know of a project, exhibit, space or anything
else related to the artist community please feel free to come promote
it, or if you're not able to attend - contact bruce.kauffman@hotmail.com

Artists hope to resolve bargaining impasse with National Gallery / Les artistes espèrent sortir de l'impasse des négociations avec le Musée des beaux-arts

Le français suit l'anglais

Visual artists hope to resolve bargaining impasse with the National Gallery

Tuesday, October 27, 2009 – Visual artists will be sitting down next week with the National Gallery of Canada in hopes of resolving a bargaining impasse that has been outstanding for two years. Negotiations, which first began in 2002, broke down following a disagreement over a point of law regarding the payment of artists’ fees.

“We have been disappointed by the slow pace of negotiations but are hopeful these discussions will be fruitful and we will see a resolution in the next few months,” said Karl Beveridge, co-chair of the artists’ negotiation committee.

The case is a record for the Canadian Artists and Producers Professional Relations Tribunal (CAPPRT) – the body that oversees negotiations between artists’ professional associations and national producers. Most first scale agreements take less than two years to negotiate.

The artists’ negotiation committee consists of The Canadian Artists’ Representation/le Front des artists canadiens (CARFAC) and le Regroupement des artiststes en arts visuels (RAAV). Both organizations are certified under the Status of the Artist Act to negotiate on behalf of visual artists on a variety of professional workplace issues. They also defend artists’ rights through advocacy and professional development and produce a schedule of artists’ fees that is widely recognized as the national standard.
