Recent Residents

The residency has been going strong here at Spark Box Studio. In the last part of January we had the pleasure of working with Quebec painter (and now printmaker) Manuela Jarry. Manuela focused primarily on her bold floral paintings but also learned linocut and etching while at the studio. She also blogged about her experience at Spark Box Studio each day, which can be seen here: manuelajarry.blogspot.com

Kingston artist Don Maynard also spent some time at the residency in early February. He was preparing a model for a large scale steel commission for the Canadian archives.

Our third Residency Award winner is at the studio now. Agnieszka Foltyn (Mishi) is a 23 year old Concordia graduate. She is working on large scale drawings during her week long stay at the residency.

Friday Night Flux with the Cedar Tavern Singers at the Baby Grand

Friday Night Flux with the Cedar Tavern Singers

When: Friday March 19, 2010 at 7pm
Where: The Grand Theatre (Baby Grand), 218 Princess St, Kingston, ON.
Admission: $10

Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, in association with Apple Crisp Arts, is proud to present Friday Night Flux, a variety revue headlined by The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonoréalistes, the conceptual art-ernative folk rock duo of Mary-Ann McTrowe and Daniel Wong (Lethbridge, AB). Their performance will be propelled by local talent, including the comedy stylings of Duncan Links, belly dancing led by Aleks Bragoszewska and Lisa Pannock, and perhaps some other surprises. You will also be hit by the trombone barrage of the ’Bone Ultimatum. Nine young musicians from the Montreal jazz scene (including Kingston's own Taylor Donaldson) perform first class music, and six of them are on trombone.  The ’Bone Ultimatum appear courtesy of the Apple Crisp Music Festival. A free after party at The Mansion with Tea for the Voyage will prolong the merriment.

The Cedar Tavern Singers AKA The Phonoréalistes met sometime in the distant past around the year 2006, when two individuals of musi-artistic temperament were summoned to the mountainous regions of the north. While enduring not only the harsh climes, but also bear, elk, and T-Rex attacks on a regular basis, they forged a voice of a sub-sub-genre of musical art. In the majestic Southern Continental Ranges of the Canadian Rockies, the two intrepid heroes united to fight the good fight and to sing the good song (and occasionally the bad song) in recitals that are part performance art, part art history lecture and part pop song. Through their actions, McTrowe and Wong are engaging new audiences for the art history they tear down and send up.

TICKETS NOW ON SALE.  Admission is $10. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Grand Theatre Box Office, 218 Princess Street Kingston, Ontario or by phone at 613-530-2050. The Grand Theatre Box Office hours are Monday through Saturday 12:00 p.m. to 6 p.m. on non-show days; 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on performance days and two hours prior to a performance on Sundays and holidays.

Daniel Wong is an interdisciplinary artist from Lethbridge, Alberta working in a range of forms including installation, performance, writing, drawing, and music.  He received a BFA from the University of Lethbridge in 2003 and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario in 2006.

Mary-Anne McTrowe has a BFA from the University of Lethbridge (1998) and an MFA from Concordia University in Montreal (2001). Her work has spanned a number of media, and recent interests include the crocheting of cozies for everyday objects and the proposing of ever-larger cozies for natural and man-made architecture, and performance and static work about the sasquatch.

Paranoid Android Like You've Never Heard It Before

Steven Page & Art of Time Ensemble Stop At The Grand Theatre

Former Barenaked Ladies vocalist Steven Page joins the
internationally acclaimed Art of Time Ensemble for an evening that
you don't want to miss March 3 at 8 p.m. at the Grand Theatre.

Kingston is one of only a dozen stops on the concert tour celebrating
the release of A Singer Must Die, Page's first album since leaving
his twenty year post as lead singer for the Barenaked Ladies.

Art of Time Ensemble was formed in 1998 by renowned classical pianist
and Artistic Director Andrew Burashko. It is a collective that
comprises some of the most unsurpassed classical and jazz musicians
in Canada. Joined by Page, this performance is an eclectic blend of
classical, world and contemporary music.

Page's song choices reflect his own intense interest in all kinds of
music. The material ranges from songs by Canadians Leonard Cohen,
Jane Siberry, Rufus Wainwright, The Weakerthans and Barenaked Ladies,
to Radiohead and Elvis Costello and lesser-known but excellent
artists like The Magnetic Fields, The Mountain Goats and The Divine
Comedy. These songs are arranged by the brightest talents in
Toronto's jazz and classical music fraternity and produced by
Jonathan Goldsmith whose multi-decade musical resume is inspiring.

Now in its eleventh season, Art of Time Ensemble is one of Canada's
most innovative and artistically accomplished music ensembles. Not
content to rehash basic classical repertoire, Burashko and Art of
Time Ensemble have become known for their daring interaction with the
Toronto cultural scene. Their mandate is to give classical music the
contemporary relevance and context it needs to maintain a broader
audience to survive. Since its inception, Art of Time has steadily
grown in reputation as an ensemble that undertakes and delivers
programs that are at once thought provoking and compelling. Committed
to finding new ways of blending classical music with other genres as
well as other art forms, each Art of Time program is uniquely
different in theme and content.

"Art of Time is simply one of the most interesting, innovative,
original and eclectic arts companies in North America. Andrew
Burashko is a brilliant artist whose curiosity knows no bounds. A
season ticket to Art of Time is the best buy in town." - David Ferry,
Director/Actor.

Terry's songwriting contemporaries refer to him as a musical triple threat. He's also an avid environmentalist, dedicated dad and loving husband, all elements that colour his striking original material. Terry's lyrics speak straight from the heart – and from a charged social conscience. His stirring melodies are supported by sophisticated finger-style guitar orchestrations. The result: songs that are often anthemic, and always profoundly affecting.

New Shanghai Circus Shows Sold Out At The Grand

New Shanghai Circus Shows Sold Out At The Grand

The astonishing athletes of the New Shanghai Circus defy gravity and execute breathtaking feats as they stretch the limits of human ability in their spellbinding sold-out show coming to the Grand Theatre.

There is a performance for school children and their teachers on the morning of February 24 and, in the evening, a sold-out show for the public at 7 p.m. Fearless performers with boundless energy bring to Kingston more than two thousand years of Chinese circus tradition. If it's humanly possible - and even if it's not-Shanghai's acrobats, jugglers and contortionists do it with spectacular flair! This show is a beautifully orchestrated presentation of Chinese circus acts dating back to the harvest festivals of 2000 years ago.

Brian McCurdy, Cultural Director, is thrilled with the response to these performances. "The Grand Theatre Presents program is offering a wide range of performances from companies across the globe. Based on the success of these shows, we are expanding our offerings for the 2010-2011 season to include more high-quality, internationally-renowned artists for family and educational performances."

The New Shanghai Circus will amaze and astound audience members with their agility and flexibility. Talented performers will transport the packed house to exotic locales. Thrilling acts include the lion dance, jar juggling, hoop-diving, trapeze, aerial ballet, and much more! Most of the troupe members come from Shanghai and have been training since a very early age. Now putting in three to four hours of training per day, they are ready to perform an array of exhilarating feats!

Tickets for all future Grand Theatre shows can be purchased online at <http://www.kingstongrand.ca>, or through the Grand Theatre Box Office at 218 Princess St., 613-530-2050. The Grand Theatre Box Office hours are Monday through Saturday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on non-show days; 12 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on performance days and 3 hours prior to the performance on Sundays and holidays.

The Grand Theatre Foundation would like to acknowledge Sun Life Financial as the World Rhythms Series Sponsor. The Grand Theatre offers its appreciation to its Season Partners including The Kingston Radisson as its Official Hospitality Underwriter, CKWS Television as its Official Television Partner and Kingston Life as its Official Print Media Partner. The Radio Partner for this performance is 98.3 Fly FM.

Down With Webster is an eight piece band out of Toronto, ON. Formed in
1998 when they were barely teenagers!

DWW writes, produces and rehearses all of their music in their garage
studio but they are definitely more than just a garage band. Over the
last eight years, the band has built up an arsenal of material
consisting of over 200 songs, an energy-packed live show and a rock
solid fan-base that grows every time they play.

2006 was a huge year for the boys. They played tons of shows all over
Canada, their first single "Weekends" was added into high rotation on
CHUM stations across Canada in June and made it to the top 10 on the
Atlantic Canada charts; played the NXNE Festival and wowed fans on the
iCoke stage at Wakestock. Fall saw the boys touring Eastern Canada
playing to sold out crowds and November kicked off with their first
video shoot with Geoff McLean (30 Seconds to Mars, Buck 65) for their
second single "Miracle Mile" — watch for it this summer.

Currently the boys are working in the studio with Producer James
Robertson (Esthero, Skye Sweetnam) finishing their first full length
album, due out Spring 2007.

Their music combines all elements and styles of music without trying to
replicate any one particular genre. DWW create music that is defining
new musical boundaries and enticing fans of all ages. These
multi-talented, multi-racial young men are ready to show the world just
what happens when years of dedication, friendship, energy and raw talent
explode. This band is on their way to start a musical revolution!

Down With Webster will play Time to Laugh in Kingston, on March 13,
2010. Opening band are the 2009 K Rock Bandslam champs, Agpak Mum.
Doors are 10pm.

Whimsical exhibition opens soon at St. Lawrence College

St. Lawrence College presents a new, truly unique exhibition entitled, The Chicken History of Art, by Kingston artist Mary Peppard. The exhibition opens Friday, February 19 and runs until Wednesday, March 17 at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery on the Brockville campus of St. Lawrence College.

The Chicken History of Art is a whimsical collection of paintings that links the traditions of Western Painting to the appreciation of poultry in Western culture. The exhibition opens with a depiction of the “First Rooster” from the cave paintings of Lascaux, France (approx. 30,000 BC) and ends with modern works from the present day.

“With these paintings I attempt to give chickens the importance and respect that they deserve in our culture,” Peppard said. “I’ve dedicated these works to Zal Yanovsky and Rose Richardson who introduced me to the world of beautiful chickens.”

Please join us for an Opening Reception: Tuesday, February 23rd, 3 pm – 5 pm

Artist William Zeissler - call for works

William Zeissler was an artist who lived in Portsmouth Village in the 1950's,
'60's & '70's. He began painting in his senior years after being a sailor, a
world traveler, a translator for the Canadian Army in the 2nd world war and
a orderly at the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital. He was largely self-taught,
but painted with Kingston artists David Brown & Bob Blenderman in the '60's.
He was born & raised in Germany (Bavaria) and his work had a large dose of
old fashioned Krieghoff-like story-telling to it, with a dollop of madcap
zaniness thrown in. He painted for his own enjoyment, and was quick to give
paintings away to anybody who expressed admiration, but he didn't like to
sell his work.

One of his pieces – "The Happy Painters" – depicted an art class run amok,
with students chasing each other around the studio, and a couple of shocked
nuns at the door recoiling at the sight of the nude model. Another work was
titled "The Brain Eaters", a large work based on his experience as an
attendant at the Psychiatric Hospital, which showed a devil-like figure
spewing poison into the head of a blessed-out female figure, with a
background chorus of evil looking figures of society:- priest, politician,
academic, looking on.

He had some local recognition. A number of local collectors acquired his
work, and writer Magda Creet wrote an article about him in the Kingston Whig
Standard. I curated a retrospective of over 100 paintings at the St.
Lawrence College Art Gallery in Kingston in the late '70's, and he came and
lectured to the students.

I lost contact with him in the 1980's, and then I heard that he had died. I
visited his niece, who had inherited a vast trove of his paintings, and didn't
know what to do with them. She let me pick out a few which I still have. I
believe that there are other collectors around who own and value his work,
and I would be interested in getting in touch with them, with a view to
organising an exhibition at some point.

Live Wire Music Series

Hello Live Wire Supporters.
We have an exciting lineup to continue our 20 years of bringing quality roots, world and other exciting music to Kingston.

Live Wire Music Series presents Canadian  Aboriginal Music
Award winners, Digging Roots as well as Kingston talent Rueben De Groot  on Friday February 19 at the Octave Theatre , 711 Dalton Ave, Kingston at 8pm . Advanced tickets only $20 at Brian's Record Option, Tara Natural Foods and Renaissance Music.  At door, if available $25.
At the center of the band Digging Roots is the chemistry and songwriting of ShoShona Kish and Raven Kanatakta who produce a sound somewhere between the lines of roots, rock, hip hop, and blues.
Kish and Kanatakta are both superb vocalists and Kanatakta is considered one of Canada's most expressive guitarists. Kish's emotional range is evident from breathy seductive textures on some songs to the throaty wails that have garnered her live performance references to the likes of Janis Joplin. Still playing tube-electrified acoustic guitars, Kanatakta's chops really shine through from minimalist melodies, to searing blues inspired slide guitar to epic Zeppelin-esque solos. Digging Roots won the Galaxie Rising Star Award in 2007 and the 2009 CAMA (Canadian Aboriginal Music Award) for group of the year. www.diggingrootsmusic.com

Supertramp's Crime Of The Century Recreated Live

Supertramp's Crime Of The Century Recreated Live

The popular Bell World Kingston Classic Albums Live Series returns with
Supertramp's Crime of the Century. With a track list that includes "Bloody
Well Right", "Asylum" and "Dreamer," you won't want to miss this performance
at the Grand Theatre on February 20 at 8 p.m.

Classic Albums Live has been presenting sold-out performances across North
America since 2003. CAL is a concert series based in Toronto, with musicians
performing classic rock albums in their entirety using some of the best
studio musicians the world has to offer. These concerts have been a
highlight of the Grand Theatre Presents season, and here's your chance to
experience one again.

In October, 1974 Crime of the Century, Supertramp's third album release,
marked the beginning of a long and illustrious career for a band that
originally came together through the 'Musicians Wanted'
section of a British paper. Experience the keyboard-powered and sax-coloured
progressive pop sounds recreated live.

"With Crime of the Century, Supertramp established themselves as one of the
handful of progressive rock acts that could sell albums and have hit
singles. Stripping away the longwinded excesses of their first two albums,
Crime of the Century featured tighter, more melodic songs..." Stephen Thomas
Erlewine , The All-Music Guide to Rock, 1995

Tickets can be purchased online at <http://www.kingstongrand.ca>, or through
the Grand Theatre Box Office at 218 Princess St., 613-530-2050. The Grand
Theatre Box Office hours are Monday through Saturday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m. on
non-show days; 12 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. on performance days and 2 hours prior to

Jonah: Live at Sydenham Street United & Casting Call

Jonah

Sydenham Street United Church is looking forward to hosting Canadian
environmental composer R. Murray Schafer. On April 17th, the youth group Many
Gifts One Spirit is presenting the composer’s musical play, Jonah.
Jonah is a musical based on the well‐known bible story of a man named Jonah who is
running from God, from responsibility, from what he knows to be true in his heart.
The play is an intergenerational effort, with parts for men and women as well as
children. Jonah will be presented in the magnificent sanctuary of SSUC on Saturday
evening, April 17. Artistic direction will be by the composer: Murray Schafer will
meet the cast in mid‐February (date to be confirmed) to discuss his vision of the
play. He will entrust weekly rehearsal to artistic director Sarah Gibson Bray and
musical director Marie Anderson. Schafer will be present in the final week of
production to add his unique creative spirit to the production. This is a Sydenham
Street United Church endeavor and we are welcoming anyone who is interested in
exploring the Jonah story. Solo roles and chorus parts are available for youth, ages
nine and up, and adults. Any children ages four to eight who are involved in the
Sunday morning Many Gifts One Spirit will also be involved. There will be a limited
number of spaces available. Enthusiasm, willingness to take direction, and creative
openness are more important than previous dramatic and musical experience. This
is a rare opportunity to work with Canada’s renowned composer R. Murray Schafer.
The Canadian Music Center quoted Yehudi Menuhin who spoke of Schafer saying,
“His strong, benevolent, and highly original imagination and intellect, a dynamic power
whose manifold personal expressions and aspirations are in total accord with the urgent
needs and dreams of humanity today.”

Mr. Schafer will meet the cast to discuss the presentation on Sunday, February 20 at
2 pm. Rehearsals begin on Saturday morning, March 6 and continue every Saturday
until the production. For information, call Marie Anderson, 613‐531‐0814 or email

For Immediate Release – February 3, 2010

On Saturday, March 6 the Cantabile Choirs’ fourteenth season, “Living Colours of Song” continues with “White Waves on the Water” featuring the Cantabile Girls’ Choir, Young Men’s Chorus, Youth Singers, Men’s Chorus, and Women’s Chorus and guest composer/conductor Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott is one of the most sought-after and celebrated composers and conductors in Britain today. He has been involved in choral music most of his life - he was a chorister in the choir of King's College, Cambridge, and a member of the British vocal group The King's Singers, the most recorded and broadcast vocal ensemble in history.  He has been a full time composer since 1997. He is Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Singers, with whom he works regularly in studio recordings and concerts, and he has also guest conducted the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin.   His busy international career takes him as guest conductor for major choral festivals across the globe.  His impressive catalogue of works is published by Oxford University Press.

Since his first appearance with the Cantabile Choirs of Kingston, Bob Chilcott has become an honorary patron of the organization.  He is deeply impressed by the high standard of singing, the enthusiasm and dedication of the Cantabile choristers and looks forward to working with them through several days of workshops leading up to the concert.

The concert features the world premiere of ‘Dream Land’ by Mr. Chilcott commissioned by the Cantabile Choirs.  Several other of Chilcott’s memorable works will be highlighted on the concert, including “Making Waves”, “Like a Singing Bird” and the powerfully moving “In the Heart of the World.’ His rousing rendition of the traditional Irish folksong “Mairi’s Wedding” has become a favorite of the Youth Singers and audiences alike.

Julie Andrée T. Solo Performance at Modern Fuel

Julie Andree T

Julie Andrée T. Solo Performance at Modern Fuel
Artist’s Talk: Wednesday February 17, 2010 at 7pm
Performance: Thursday February 18, 2010 at 7pm
Where: Modern Fuel Gallery, 21 Queen St., Kingston ON

For Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre, performance artist Julie Andrée T. will be exploring the possibility of using the body as a canvas, to create a moving drawing suggesting a changing landscape. Without a stable point of reference, the performer oscillates between being a body with an identity and a body-object. Inspired and fascinated by tragic moments, Julie Andrée T. is searching for a universal language while telling a story. She asks, “What if the story is just a deviation to walk towards abstraction?”

The iconoclastic Julie Andrée T. dazzles audiences with disconcerting, moving and unclassifiable performance pieces that deploy an astounding transformation of the body. She has had outstanding success with her unsettling and fascinating works that are a hybrid of performance-installation and theatre. “Not Waterproof” and “Rouge,” for example, will play the Festival TransAmériques this June in Montreal. Julie Andrée T. is now returning to performance presented in the “traditional” way in the experimental space of alternative art galleries, as she explores a new series of performances dealing with the body and drawing.

Join Julie Andrée T. for a discussion of her artistic practice on Wednesday February 17, 2010 at 7pm, and attend the performance on Thursday February 18, 2010 at 7pm.  Both events are at Modern Fuel.  Admission is free.

Julie Andrée T. is an installation and performance artist whose works have been shown in Canada, U.S.A, South America, Asia and Europe. >From 2008-2009 she taught Performance Art as a guest artist at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (USA). She is also on the programming committee at Inter/Lieu (Quebec City) an artist run center dedicated to Performance and Installation.

The Grand To Launch Fine Wines & Food Festival

The first-ever Grand Festival of Fine Canadian Wines and Food will
takeplace on October 16, 2010, and will feature wine tastings and food
pairings, lectures from the Grand Theatre stage, and will showcase wines
not only from the acclaimed region of Prince Edward County, but those
from across the country.

The Grand Theatre Foundation's Chair, Walter Fenlon, and Writer and Educator
David Lawrason revealed the details of the festival to a group of regional
wine lovers on Thursday, January 28th at the Grand Theatre.

Attendees to the launch were treated to tastings from six celebrated
wineries from Prince Edward County - Huff Estates, The Grange of Prince
Edward Vineyards & Estate Winery, Rosehall Run Vineyards, Black Prince
Winery, Norman Hardie Winery, and Closson Chase Vineyards. A sampling of
Kingston's best restaurants including Le Chien Noir, AquaTerra Restaubistro,
Fort Henry Restaurants, Tango Restaurant & Tapas Bar, Olivea Restaurant and
Windmills Restaurant & Catering contributed a wide variety of food pairings
for the evening.

Walter Fenlon, Chair of the Grand Theatre Foundation, is thrilled about the
partnership. "So many people in our community have an interest in the
high-quality wines being produced locally, as well as the wide range of
top-level restaurateurs in Kingston. This Festival will not only raise funds
to support the Grand Theatre Presenting program and educational activities,
but will also fill a need in the community for Kingstonians to have a unique
event to celebrate our local chefs, food producers and wineries."

"The Grand Theatre is a marvelous space and Kingston is a great fit for a
Canadian wine festival," observes David Lawrason. "It's an historic capital
of the country set in a beautiful region that is coming into its own as a
gastronomic and arts centre. We are starting modestly in 2010 but there is
no reason this festival could not become one of the most important wine and
food events in the country."

As a former Globe and Mail wine columnist David Lawrason first wrote about
Prince Edward County as the industry started in 2001. He moved to Belleville
in 2005 to more closely chronicle the County's extraordinary growth (there
are now over 30 wineries). Currently writing for Toronto Life, he is also
founder of Wine Access magazine, co-founder of the Canadian Wine Awards, and
organizer of the Quinte Arts Council's Artevino Wine Awards competition,
which will also be part of Our Grand Festival of Fine Canadian Wines and
Food. He is also a contributor the new County Grapevine magazine, a media
partner to the Festival.

The Grand Theatre Foundation is a registered charitable organization and
raises funds to bring the joy of the performing arts to Kingston, the
surrounding region and beyond. With revenue from ticket sales covering only
a portion of the "Grand Theatre Presents" annual operating budget, and
education and community outreach costs, the Foundation actively fundraises
to support these activities.

The 1st Annual Grand Festival of Canadian Wines will take place October 16,
2010, at the Grand Theatre. Tickets will go on sale at the Grand Theatre
Presents season launch in the spring and will be available through the Grand
Theatre Box Office at 218 Princess St., by phone at 613-546-5020 or online
at <http://www.kingstongrand.ca>.

Basia Bulat Kingston album launch

*BASIA BULAT TO RELEASE /HEART OF MY OWN/**//*

*FIRST TOUR DATE ANNOUNCED IN TORONTO*

Secret City Records is thrilled to announce the sophomore album from
*Basia Bulat*, entitled /Heart Of My Own/, to be released on *January
26, 2010*. And for those fans that can't wait until the new year,
Basia's first single, "Gold Rush", will be available digitally on iTunes
on November 10^th .

Basia's 2007 debut, /Oh, My Darling/, was a success both at home and on
the international scene, garnering a Polaris Prize nomination, and
praise from outlets like NPR, who labeled "In the Night" as "one of
2008's great singles," citing Bulat's "graceful effervescence and …
innate understanding of momentum." Breathless, thirsty, and dislodged
from dreary nostalgia, /Oh My Darling/ was the spark that set Basia
Bulat apart from the raft of typical singer-songwriters.

Like it's predecessor, /Heart of My Own /was produced by Howard Bilerman
at Hotel2Tango in Montreal, but it's a decidedly more eclectic record in
terms of the songwriting and instrumentation. "I think it is at times
extremely sparse and, well, spacious, with big choirs singing," Bulat
says, "and then it gets really dense with really spirited and rolling
drums."

Nearly all the songs on /Heart of My Own/ were written while on the
road: traveling between cities, crossing the Canadian prairies,
searching for a place to stop in the Nevada desert, trailing through the
Smoky Mountains, standing in the bright dusk of a summer night in the
Yukon. Perhaps most surprising was the strong influence her short time
in the Yukon had on this album. Basia spent five days and nights in
Dawson City, where for the first time she experienced true silence. "I
felt my mind was overwhelmed with ideas. It had been a long-time dream
of mine to make it to the Yukon, so to finally accomplish that, and for
it to be possible because of my music, was also a very overwhelming thing."

With influences ranging from The Get Up Kids to Grade, Mineral to Cave-In, and even Pedro the Lion to Slayer, Silverstein is a true mix of everything at once. The powerful melodic singing and gut wrenching screaming of vocalist Shane Told evokes the pain, struggle and emotion of the lyrics, which represent true feelings of heartbreak and frustration. Silverstein finds a way to keep the music unique and interesting, but always catchy. Bringing a violin into the mix, and adding 6/8 meter melodic parts to screaming breakdowns help to achieve this. The sound is reinforced by the creativity of drummer Paul Koelher and the energetic playing of bassist Bill Hamilton. The shimmering clean, and singing distorted guitars of Boshart, and Josh Bradford complete the lineup, and capture the listener with their harmony and power.

SILVERSTEIN tour promoting PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals):

It's no secret Silverstein and PETA are buddies.

Not only have the guys participated in PSAs for the animal rights group, they also threw down an eating challeng with KFC's vegan faux chicken sandwiches when the restaurant first offered them.  Band member Shane Told recently explained how he and the other Silverstein musicians got acquainted with PETA.  "Our whole band is vegetarian. We just happen to all be vegetarians. We didn't come together, it just happened. It wasn't something that our band was fueled by; it was just something that we all had in common. I was talking to PETA while they were at a show and I mentioned that we were all vegetarians, they thought that was very rare. They really wanted to work with us so they contacted us. They wanted us to get involved. We don't mind spreading the word, it's important to have a table with some information at the shows. That's how I learned about it originally from going to hard-core shows and seeing their table that explains about fur and vegetarianism, helping people understand it. That's how it came about."

Silverstein will play Time to Laugh on February 25th.  Tickets are $20 in advance and will go quickly!  The show is all ages/licenced and will run from 7-10pm.  Tickets at Brian's, The Jungle, Destinations, Sunrise (Cat Mall), and can be purchased online through ticketbreak.com

The Zine Project

One mission is the work with local youth by providing them with opportunities to cultivate their creativity. One way we plan to do this is through a small run publication, or zine, filled with student art (visual, written, etc.). The publication will be based on a theme that young artists can develop their work around. The end product will be a professionally printed artist booklet. This booklet will then be promoted and hopefully sold at various locations. It is meant to be a fun collaborative project with multiple individuals involved.

We have decided that the theme will be: HEROES IN STREETS

*if you have any questions about the zine project please email us at info@sparkboxstudio.com

Live Concert With The Award-winning La Pietà

Live Concert With The Award-winning La Pietà

Angèle Dubeau, one of Canada's most prominent virtuoso violinists, has
performed on the world's greatest stages in a spectacular career that has
spanned more than thirty years and thirty countries.

Now she is bringing her all-female string ensemble, La Pietà, to Kingston on
February 11th to present a unique spin on classical music that will impress
and delight any music lover.
Highlights of this performance will include Philip Glass's suite from the
film The Hours, and the Latin-American sounds of de Falla, Ginastera and
Piazzolla.

Philip Glass is known primarily for his minimalist sound and repetitive
beats. Angèle Dubeau has worked with Glass since the '90s, and won his
consent for the creation of Philip Glass-Portrait, an album released to
immediate success in 2008. The Quebec violinist and her La Pietà ensemble
interpret some of the most memorable pieces by the master of American
minimalism. Their concert will feature two pieces from this album: Overture
for La Belle et la Bête, and the suite from The Hours. This three-movement
suite for piano, strings, harp and celesta, was arranged by Michael Riesman
from Philip Glass's soundtrack of the Stephen Daldry film (for which Nicole
Kidman won an Oscar in 2003), itself based on the Michael Cunningham novel.

Enhance your concert experience! Karma Tomm of Queen's Conservatory of Music
will moderate a free chat with Angèle Dubeau at 7 p.m. in the Davies Lounge.
Free for all ticket holders.

Visit Angèle Dubeau and La Pietà's official
website: <http://www.angeledubeau.com>.

Tickets for La Pietà can be purchased online at
<http://www.kingstongrand.ca>, or through the Grand Theatre Box Office at
218 Princess St., 613-530-2050. The Grand Theatre Box Office hours are
Monday through Saturday 12-6 p.m. on non-show days; 12-8:30 p.m. on
performance days and 3 hours prior to the performance on Sundays and
holidays.

The Grand Theatre Foundation would like to acknowledge Jensen Building Ltd.
as the Classical Remix Series Sponsor. The Grand Theatre offers its

Apple Crisp Call for Artist

Apple Crisp Records is seeking artists and writers to participate in a
collaborative
comics-based poster project for the Apple Crisp Zine #5. Artists are
encouraged to submit
short comic strips or lineart / grayscale illustrations. Writers may
submit stories of no more

covering one another's songs and growing their own artistry through the
strength and inspiration
of their collaborations. In this spirit, we encourage collaborations
