Summer Jobs 2008 - Tour Guide / Marketer

JOB DESCRIPTION

To market, deliver and evaluate the “Astonishing Past” Walking Tour program of Kingston General Hospital, a National Historic Site, overseen by the Museum of Health Care at Kingston.

The Tour Guide/Marketer will:
· Welcome Museum visitors and Walking Tour participants
· Conduct guided tours in a manner that engages and delights participants, while conveying the requisite information
· Market tours within the framework of an existing marketing plan
· Keep detailed, accurate records of marketing and tour delivery statistics
· Evaluate and suggest improvements to tour and tour marketing
· Assist in the development of customized tour options for specific groups (i.e. ESL (English as a second language), family)
· Assist with other Museum programs as needed

The Tour Guide/Marketer will be directly supervised by the Museum Manager. Training and performance will be monitored through a combination of direct observation, weekly management meetings and activity reports, a mid-summer performance evaluation, an end-of position performance review, and an exiting interview (to gather feedback for future improvements).

Required qualifications
· Excellent English oral and written communications skills are essential.
· Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
· Experience with and knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Excel

Desired qualifications
· Experience in and/or knowledge of event planning and marketing
· Experience in and/or knowledge of history, the history of medicine, anthropology, or a related discipline
· Experience in and/or knowledge of the principles of museum/heritage interpretation and adult education.
· Interest in a career in history, history of medicine, museology, education, heritage interpretation, tourism or other related discipline.
· Knowledge of French or other second language is an asset.
· Occasional evening work required.

Positions Details
This position is 35-hrs/week, Wednesdays to Sundays, from May 14th to August 30th, 2008. Wage is $11.00/hr.

Summer Jobs 2008 - Museum Interpreter

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Museum Interpreter will:
• provide a welcome and orientation to visitors
• deliver guided tours of the Museum's exhibitions and provide back-up tour guide support to our Astonishing Past of Kingston General Hospital Walking Tour
• assist in the planning and implementation of special events
• complete a project to improve interpretive techniques by researching exhibit content and suggesting appropriate interpretive strategies.
• have the opportunity to participate in professional development learning opportunities
• become familiar with Museum of Health Care policies and procedures in general, and health and safety, education, and interpretation policies in particular.

The Interpreter will be directly supervised by the Museum Manager. Please note that, as this project is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, applicants must:
• be between 15 and 30 years of age;
• have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
• be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
• be legally entitled to work in Canada according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Positions Details
