Want to see some cool books and maybe win a prize?

The Ontario Time Machine is a fun website that lets you explore books from Ontario’s past. You can have a virtual look at really old books and find songbooks, recipe books, diaries, almanacs and much more, from 1759 to World War I. Click on the links to see pictures, hear sounds and read explanations. And now, you can win great prizes by bringing a really old book to life!

How, you ask? Explore the books in the Ontario Time Machine at www.ontariotimemachine.ca . Choose the one your class likes best.

Think of a way to bring the book to life. For example, you could: Learn a song from Imrie and Graham’s Musical and Pictorial Galaxy; make a recipe from the Family Recipe Book; write a satire of Canadian politics (or the politics in your class!) based on The Children of Mrs. Dominion . . . or anything else you can think of. Your imagination is the only limit!

Projects will be judged on originality, understanding of the material, presentation skill, and sense of fun. Prizes include class pizza parties and digital cameras.

The contest is open to classes and homeschool groups based in Ontario and studying the Grade 7 or 8 Ontario history curriculum. Contest submissions must be done by a teacher or homeschool instructor.

Submit your project by November 30, 2008. Contest details are available at www.ontariotimemachine.ca/contest .

Good luck and have fun!

You will also learn about ways to enforce and protect your legal rights should you encounter problems, such as small claims court.

Topics covered:
- Copyright and moral rights
- Common legal terms & their definitions
- Tips for negotiating contracts
- Enforcing & protecting your legal rights

She is currently completing the second stage of a dual Master's in Law program at the University of Ottawa and American University in Washington D.C. Her primary area of interest is working to find a practical solution for licensing digital content and specifically artistic works on the Internet. Over the last 5 years, Tanya has concentrated her academic focus on technology law and specifically copyright. Tanya was called to the Bar in the Province of Ontario in 2008. She currently sits on the Board of the Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa / le Conseil des organismes du patrimoine d' Ottawa (CHOO/COPO) and does volunteer work for the Canadian Conference of the Arts.

The Festival was built on the premise that all workers share a common struggle for decent wages, healthy working conditions and a living culture. Mayworks' goal is to promote the interests of cultural workers and trade unionists, and to bring working-class culture from the margins of cultural activity onto centre stage.

All visual artists are invited to submit the following:

1) A curriculum vitae
2) Images of past work, to a maximum of 10 images, in any of these formats: digital images as PDF's or JPG's on a CD, print, or website link
